Elie Wiesel uses night to notice how Madame Schächter has gone insane. In Night, Madame Schächter goes crazy and raves round fire. She points into the night a screams, Fire! I give the sack see a fire! I can see a fire! (Wiesel p.22). Madame Schächter slowly loses her religious belief because her husband is taken from her with the first deportees. Madame Schächter dies in agony without her husband. evil is a characteristic of Night. The darkness in Night represents the kernel of light there is in the wagon that allows hidden things to happen.
During Eliezers first night at Birkenau many things happen to him. A S.S. separates Eliezer from his father and baby sister. Then he yells at Eliezers group about the camp and what the prisoners are going to do.

The prisoners suddenly lose their faith. Eliezer sees babies in a lorry being dumped into a burning ditch.
